At Rowley Hall we teach phonics through Read Write Inc. Read Write Inc. starts in Nursery where children begin to learn the ‘Set  1 picture cards’.  The Read Write Inc. learning journey then continues into Reception and Key Stage 1 where children learn set 1,2 & 3 sounds, blending them to read real and nonsense words.  Children are assessed every half term and are grouped accordingly.

 Phonics Screening Check

At the end of Year 1 children’s phonics knowledge will be assessed. This is a Government Statutory Assessment known as the ‘Phonics Screening Check’.  This screening check confirms whether children are able to confidently blend and read words and will identify sounds needing further consolidation in Year 2.  For more information on the Phonics Screen check click here.

A parent meeting will be held before the children take the phonics screening check, answering any questions you may have.
